Super Mario Maker is part of the Super Mario franchise, developed by Nintendo for the Wii U.
Scanning any 30th Anniversary Super Mario Bros. amiibo on the Wii U Gamepad while in Editing Mode will make a Big Mushroom appear for use in that course. The Big Mushroom will transform Mario into Big Mario, a giant-sized Small-Mario sprite that can destroy nearly all blocks. Additionally, the game screen changes to resemble a retro CRT screen and enemies take on aspects of Mario (such as red coloring, mustaches or Mario hats). Some enemies even turn into Luigi or are ridden by Luigi. Depending on which color amiibo you use, the Big Mushroom & Mario will either retain their classic coloring or be based on their modern colors.
Scanning any other compatible amiibo on the Wii U Gamepad while in Editing Mode will grant early access to a Costume Mario outfit that can be used with the Mystery Mushroom. These outfits act like Super Mario and are based on the amiibo you scanned, replacing most sounds with those from that character’s game. You can also unlock them by playing 100 Mario mode, even if you do not own the amiibo.
You can only use amiibo, as well as Mystery Mushroom & Big Mushroom, in the original Super Mario Bros. graphical style.
Below is a list of all amiibo compatible with Super Mario Maker.
